Somehow the formatting was way screwed up but I fixed it now. The links will work.

guys (gals) - i installed java 6 and virtualbox on my laptop last night.  when installing virtialbox (on xp sp3) i kept getting a windows xp verification warning, but proceeded.  then i got the prompt that it would have to kill my network connection to finish installing, then would reconnect.  i lost my wireless connection, and never got it back.  did it eff up some driver?  okay - it was my wife's work laptop, somewhat feel a sense of urgency to get it back in working condition. =)  any ideas?

UPDATE: nevermind, it's working today

After trying to install Virtual Box I got a message that says, "The following install step failed: run postflight script for Sun VirtualBox Kernel Extensions. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."

What does this mean?  What should I do?

I have an iMac running 10.5.7

I cannot download Java 1.6 because I dont have an Intel processor, I still have a PowerPC G4.  What is the best way for me to get the homebrew apps?

You don't need to install the emulator... Just the SDK. The emulator has nothing to do with installing homebrew apps. Install the SDK, skip the emulator and try the palm-install command.

Hi Invisible Man

Thanks for your help.  Followed instructions but when I am in Terminal and after I entered the palm-install and then dragged the file it keeps coming back with connection refused.  Any additional help would be appreciated!

It sounds like you forgot to enable developer mode.

To do this type:

upupdowndownleftrightleftrightbastart

Into universal search and then tap the dev mode enabler that comes up and turn it on. Your Pre will reboot.

Then try it.

If you have already enabled dev mode unplug your Pre from your computer, reset it, then try again.

Sometimes a good reboot can fix many things.

Find the thread "Homebrew apps for noobs" on this forum.   I'm telling you if you follow the instructions it will work.  I can't tell Mac users if it will work on theirs, but it worked on my XP.  The instructions go over everything starting with dl of Java, install SDK,install,Novacom, turn on Dev mode, then how to install the apps.

One of the first two apps you need to install is Dev Mode Launcher and File Coaster.  Dev Mode allows you to launch and disable dev mode without having to type in the hack code.  File Coaster will allow you to install apps straight to the Pre without a PC or Mac!  It's as simple as cut and paste after that!

I have about 15 new apps on my pre. My text ringer is the Star Trek communicator, my wallpaper changes every hour!  Kind of cool.  I also have the Magic Eight Ball and Light Saber (later is sluggish).  Oh yeah, Yatze and Snake are fun too.

All thanks to the forum "Homebrew for noobs" and palmpreforum.org.

The rep at the Sprint store wanted me to give a class for him on installing HBs.  Not sure I'm that good, can't even get a link to work on this post! But I installed HB with no problems.  So you know it must be easy!

You do have to read about the apps!  I've run into one or two that DO require rooting, those I don't mess with.

Good luck, you can do it too!

if you are interested in rooting to make changes like having more launcher pages, turning your camera flash into a flashlight, etc., rooting isn't that tough and is very low risk if you're not an ape.  i don't have much experience with it, and i've felt very safe making back-end changed.  there's plenty of documentation to teach yourself, but feel free to ask if you run into a snag - the moderators and pros are pretty good with helping out!  Cheesy
