Title: Audacity Tutorial Post by: TheInvsbleMan on March 04, 2009, 10:45:58 AM Yea, it is a great program :) Like I said once you learn it, you can make ringtones in about 30 seconds. I will write up a tutorial and include it below. Good luck and any questions feel free to ask in here.
I have added a video supplement to this post: Video Supplement: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QN9FJYWIdY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QN9FJYWIdY) Download link:http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) Quick tutorial: 1.)Drag file to Audacity to import it. 2.)Split the stereo track: (http://img.skitch.com/20090304-8g7929aixa8gsbmakw7n521h6j.preview.jpg) (http://skitch.com/sirna/bg5q6/fullscreen) Click for full size (http://skitch.com/sirna/bg5q6/fullscreen) 3.)Cut it down to 1 channel. Because your phone only has 1 speaker and is mono. (http://img.skitch.com/20090304-d949uw86a43bwt324u2f24u7.preview.jpg) (http://skitch.com/sirna/bg5xg/01-dont-stop-believing) Click for full size (http://skitch.com/sirna/bg5xg/01-dont-stop-believing) 4.)Set it to mono, again, you only have 1 speaker. (http://img.skitch.com/20090304-1ckemt4pdxmwsmmf8wr1ejnc9p.preview.jpg) (http://skitch.com/sirna/bg5xw/fullscreen) Click for full size (http://skitch.com/sirna/bg5xw/fullscreen) 5.)Make your selection, just like you are highlighting text. You can listen to your selection by hitting play, and it will only play your selection. You can click and drag either end of your selection to add or subtract to or from it. (http://img.skitch.com/20090304-e4faap6fpqk87rjj5prxnd2f3n.preview.jpg) (http://skitch.com/sirna/bg5x6/01-dont-stop-believing) Click for full size (http://skitch.com/sirna/bg5x6/01-dont-stop-believing) 6.)Turn up the gain if you would like. (http://img.skitch.com/20090304-ktmdqf1ug1f5ksfw4d61cn54cf.preview.jpg) (http://skitch.com/sirna/bg5tm/01-dont-stop-believing) Click for full size (http://skitch.com/sirna/bg5tm/01-dont-stop-believing) 7.)Export selection (http://img.skitch.com/20090304-tynnniwjk9u5hgkii16qq5dck3.preview.jpg) (http://skitch.com/sirna/bg5tt/fullscreen) Click for full size (http://skitch.com/sirna/bg5tt/fullscreen) 8.)Name it and select MP3. The default MP3 options should be fine for you, but if you know what you are doing feel free to tweak them. Then click save. (http://img.skitch.com/20090304-dpnm6c1crb6kc26ujfcjuxc763.preview.jpg) (http://skitch.com/sirna/bg5ta/export-file) Click for full size (http://skitch.com/sirna/bg5ta/export-file) 9.) To get it onto your phone, transfer it to the ringtone folder via USB Mode OR open the ringtone in iTunes and have your pre sync with iTunes. Those are the only ways as far as we know. Enjoy! Title: Re: Audacity Tutorial Post by: Rillo on March 04, 2009, 07:30:33 PM I gotcha.
Title: Re: Audacity Tutorial Post by: TheInvsbleMan on March 04, 2009, 08:41:53 PM Thanks Rillo.
Title: Re: Audacity Tutorial Post by: Tibfib on March 17, 2009, 05:40:14 PM I'm going to edit this and add a link to an uploader.
EDIT: Alright I changed it. EDIT: By the way, I have been using this tutorial and it works well. Good Job! I'd give you a cookie but I'm pretty sure I already gave you one. Title: Re: Audacity Tutorial Post by: TheInvsbleMan on March 17, 2009, 05:59:25 PM Thanks Tibfib, I ususally just transfer it to my phone using Bluetooth or my SD card
Title: Re: Audacity Tutorial Post by: Tibfib on March 18, 2009, 06:34:46 PM Also you might want to mention that when downloading audacity you must download the optional download, "LAME MP3 Encoder". to make MP3 ringtones.
Title: Re: Audacity Tutorial Post by: TheInvsbleMan on March 18, 2009, 07:04:42 PM Ahh well yes but it prompts you for that :)
Title: Re: Audacity Tutorial Post by: Tibfib on March 18, 2009, 07:41:06 PM Ahh well yes but it prompts you for that :) Pretty sure it didn't prompt me... but whatever. lol Title: Re: Audacity Tutorial Post by: TheInvsbleMan on March 18, 2009, 07:42:40 PM Hmmm that's odd. When I first go to export an mp3 after an install it prompts me to install it.
In any case you will also need the Lame mp3 encoder. Title: Re: Audacity Tutorial Post by: hogleg on March 27, 2009, 10:34:53 PM The new audacity comes with LAME (the beta anyway).
after you trim it, you may want to select all and do the "highpass" filter option. I set mine for 150. It's basically just filtering sound your cell phone speaker has a hard time reproducing, and it will clean up the sound. Then just email the ringer to yourself via MMS as an attachment. Title: Re: Audacity Tutorial Post by: robbskittles on May 27, 2009, 10:51:46 AM Nice write up invisible man... thanks! ;D
Title: Re: Audacity Tutorial Post by: Sovvy on May 28, 2009, 07:01:56 PM I thought you could select any mp3 on the phone to become a ringtone?
I have no idea where i read it. And I used this program to do ringtones a long time ago, so it was very easy. Title: Re: Audacity Tutorial Post by: Rillo on May 28, 2009, 07:07:30 PM Yeah you can. We didn't know this at the time. When you get to the ringtone page there is a little icon in the lower left hand corner that looks like a music note with a plus sign. There you select a song from your library.
This tutorial would be good though to trim the song to what part you want. For example if you want there chorus. If you pick a song that's just in your library it might start from the beginning, we don't know yet if there is an on-phone trimmer. Title: Re: Audacity Tutorial Post by: TheInvsbleMan on May 28, 2009, 09:10:13 PM we don't know yet if there is an on-phone trimmer. I think there is a high chance of this :) No idea for sure though. Title: Re: Audacity Tutorial Post by: gmleonar on June 01, 2009, 08:23:41 AM sick dude, thx for this i have never heard of this and this is amazing. kudos :)
Title: Re: Audacity Tutorial Post by: jrfan4ever1974 on June 07, 2009, 02:57:34 PM This is not working for me. I did everything right and I got it sent to me as a text. I went to go download it and I'm directed to the web where it just says that I'm "streaming" the file. There's no option for me to save it.
It also does the same thing if I email it to myself. It won't download the file - I can hear it - it just says "streaming" and there is no option for me to save it. What gives?! Title: Re: Audacity Tutorial Post by: Tibfib on June 07, 2009, 03:38:04 PM Hey T.I.M.

Hey Tibfib I deleted your double post ;) This is not working for me. I did everything right and I got it sent to me as a text. I went to go download it and I'm directed to the web where it just says that I'm "streaming" the file. There's no option for me to save it. It also does the same thing if I email it to myself. I don't know where you are streaming this to, but to get it to your phone plug it into your computer and choose USB mode and drag it to the ringtone folder. Yep. Both ways work. T.I.M's is faster Title: Re: Audacity Tutorial Post by: 2sslow on June 08, 2009, 03:54:19 PM I found a way that is much easier!
http://makeownringtone.com/ (http://makeownringtone.com/) Title: Re: Audacity Tutorial Post by: TheInvsbleMan on June 15, 2009, 10:57:55 PM I just added a video supplement.
Title: Re: Audacity Tutorial Post by: brewstie10 on June 22, 2009, 06:36:51 PM Okay so i have figured out the tutorial and everything, but when i try to export the ringtone it says it needs the lame encoder. So, i went to the site and tried to download it but when it opens it says that it can't locate the file so I can't download it. Any Ideas?
also i downloaded the beta version which i thought had the lame encoder >:( Title: Re: Audacity Tutorial Post by: TheInvsbleMan on June 22, 2009, 08:16:24 PM After you download the lame encoder you must tell Audacity where you put it.
So when you go to export as MP3 it should ask you to locate the lame encoder all you do is navigate to it and select it, Audacity will do the rest. Title: Re: Audacity Tutorial Post by: brewstie10 on June 23, 2009, 11:56:48 AM the problem is that it won't let me download the lame encoder
Title: Re: Audacity Tutorial Post by: brewstie10 on June 23, 2009, 12:15:15 PM ok i am pretty sure that i got the lame encoder downloaded and then when i export something it asks me to locate it and i do, but then when i click ok it says it can't locate the mp3 library. What's the deal?
Title: Re: Audacity Tutorial Post by: draztikrhymez on June 23, 2009, 04:17:49 PM Great Tutorial, I couldn't get it to work though because everytime I downloaded the lame decoder it wasn't in the zip file when unpacked. Then when I went to download the beta for some reason my work computer wouldn't let me install. Guess I'll have to wait for someone to make a app for the phone like window's mobile has for ringtone creation. Or just use garageband or pro tools at home real quick.
Title: Re: Audacity Tutorial Post by: chyam on July 01, 2009, 08:55:49 AM I am just about over this phone and have only had it since Sat. I have been trying for 4 days to download ringtones, and have read and read on here. Perhaps I am stupid but....How or where do I find a ringtone folder to drag and drop it into??? I had a link sent to my phone and it says to download it, but when I do that all it does is stream the ringtone and in the space where it says download it just stays there. So I tried plugging the phone in with the USB thing and then trying to send it to a ringtone folder....if I have to make one how do I do that? I am either beginning to think I am to stupid for this phone or I have a lemon.
As much as I didn't like my Instinct this phone is just so unuser friendly and is missing alot of great features of the Instinct...why in the world would it not have a speed dial feature that you don't have to work to make? or why does it not have voice commands, I am heading out on vacation tomorrow, and I almost think I may just have to switch the phone out today. Any help would be appreciated. Also why would we have to download a 300 page manual it should have been included....okay enough venting on my part...but some ringtones would be nice! Title: Re: Audacity Tutorial Post by: Tibfib on July 01, 2009, 09:18:22 AM To get ringtones one your pre:
1. Make sure the file is in .mp3 or .wav 2. Connect your pre to your computer and select USB Mode 3. Go to the root of your pre and find the "ringtones" folder 4. Move your ringtone into that folder. Title: Re: Audacity Tutorial Post by: gregandtink on July 10, 2009, 01:32:42 PM Worked great for me! Just forgot to dl the Lame dll. After I did that, had no problems getting it to the Pre and using it.
