Every once in a while, my Pre gets very warm in back, and the battery discharges even though the Pre is plugged into the charger and I am not using the Pre. I'm not sure if it is the battery or the circuitry that's cooking, but the whole back cover gets hot. (I do not have a Touchstone back.)

Somewhere, I recall someone saying that there must be a program still running, and it is draining the battery. But when this happens, there doesn't seem to be anything running, unless it is a hidden or background procedure I don't know about. Is there a way to display a list of background processes that might be doing this?

The fix is to turn the Pre completely off, or to remove the battery, and start it up again. Then it stays cool and does not drain the battery.

Anyone else have this problem? Any ideas about it?   Undecided

Thanks to string97bean for pointing out another thread on this topic. It helps, but it misses the important issue.

My Pre actually drains faster than I can charge it. For example, I was using Sprint Navigation with the Pre plugged into the car charger. The battery drained to 6% in about an hour, even though it was plugged in and supposedly charging.

I do not believe that any well designed product should ever drain faster than it charges. Has this happened to anyone else's Pre?

Here are a few other threads with similar stuff.   I know when I use sprint navigation and pandora at the same time in my car, even with the charger plugged in sometimes it will get hot and barely keep up with the battery drain, but that is only with that scenario

I had this problem with my old Windows Mobile phone if I was tethering and downloading torrents but I have not had this problem with the Pre at all.

Are you running the latest version of webOS?
When this happens take the back cover off feel the back is it the battery that is hot or is it just below the battery?
Are you running any homebrew apps?
Have you applied any patches (hacks) to your Pre?
Is this with a car charger, wall charger, or charging through a computer?
Is said charger an official Palm charger or 3rd party?
What were you running before this happened?
Can you replicate the issue by opening a certain app?
Does it do this while not plugged in as well?
What type of service do you have when this happens?
You said it happens on the car charger while using Sprint nav... are you driving in a rural area?

It sounds like you may have a program hanging and killing the CPU. I know this seems like a lot of questions but I can troubleshoot if you answer them Smiley For now I recommend resetting the Pre when this happens like you have been doing. Just hold Orange button + Symbol + R you don't have to pull the battery.

i had mine charging through my xbox 360 and i would assume it would think it was a computer, but it charged good for the first few days then one day it got extremely hot, said it was charging but it wasnt(i wasnt running anything) then it would only take the official palm charger, maybe you don't have the official palm car charger?

I have experienced this problem several times.  More recently after running the Nav app.

There have been a few times, when the Pre seems to self-start a program that chews up a lot of CPU cycles. Unfortunately, I have no utility to see what is running.  Is there anything out there?

I have tried doing a reset, but that does not seem to fix the problem.

Open to suggestions.

This happened to me once when WiFi hung up during engagement.  I could see what was happening, but couldn't cancel, so the battery continued to drain faster than the Pre could charge.  Finally, the phone reset and I was able to cancel WiFi (it was still attempting to engage).  The Pre was scorching, but began charging and recovered after about 10 minutes.

I have noticed when running e-mal or sms in an area where reception is low or roaming that the Pre heats up and drains the battery real quick.

I have also compared signal strengths between two Pres and there can be alot of differences sometimes in how well one picks up over the other. And the one with the worse signal drains battery quicker.

I've had the same problems.  Customer service thinks it's the email app running, but I still had the problem even after turning off the email.

It also happened to me. I had to charge my pre almost three times a day. I took it to sprint store several times they kept on saying this might be due to my email or some other apps running behind. Two weeks back, pre had audio problem (like pre never come out of earphone mode) then they had to replace it and gave me refurbished. At first I was very upset that they were giving me refurbished, but to my amazement the new one works incredibly. Now I only charge it once in 24 h. and the phone still has old battery. If don’t use the phone at all after fully charging it still have more than 85% after 24h.

I think the first pre I had had bad hardware or something.
