I have been reading about widespread cracked screens on the pre, and Sprint forcing people to go through insurance for $100, even though it may be a manufacturing defect.

some articles here:
http://www.palmpreforum.com/psb-pre-screen-cracks-emerge
http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/r22618454-Palm-pre-defect
http://forums.palmone.com/palm/board/message?board.id=weboshardware&message.id=2862

My screen cracked overnight.  I thought it might have been my fault somehow, but I am realizing that it really may be palm manufacturing.  the cracks come from the button, and I baby my phone.

Is there a way we find out actually HOW MANY people actually have the cracked screen defect?

(I am not talking about abuse, I am talking about cracks literally appearing out of nowhere)

post here if you are experiencing this, and have any new info.

From what I heard/seen, Sprint/Palm is aware of the issue and its exchanging the phones as a manufacturer's defect, so people are not having to use their insurance. If Sprint/Palm are doing this, I don't see the need of a lawsuit.

i get the feeling that phones were maybe manufactured by different companies or locations. I find it interesting that some pre's use t-5 screws and others use t-6...maybe theres a build difference.

Well i know theres deff differnt batches of phones.  My first one came in a box with a mostly orange sleeve my second came in a box with a mostly yellow sleeve.  First one had no oreo wobble and a white middle button.  Second has lots of wobble and a silver button.

I recently had the same problem.  Put my pre on the touchstone charger Saturday night before going to bed.  Sunday morning I wake up, check my phone and see this enormous spiderweb style crack covering my entire screen.  I had mail notification but could not check it.  The touch screen was now useless.  I proceed to the Sprint store (on Sunday) and inquired about this problem.  Rep there tells me he had not heard of this problem but could tell it was an internal crack.  He said the only thing he could do was order me a new phone because I was past my 30 days mark; but the new phone would be on back-order and probably won't be in for a minimum of two weeks.  I walked away pretty upset but didn't take it out on the rep.  Something just didn't feel right about this whole process so I went back to the same store Monday afternoon.  This time I asked to speak with a manager and told her my issue.  She told me to wait for her next available CSR and they would help me.  When my name was called, I was expecting more of a "hassle" but to my amazement she gave me a brand new Palm Pre, no insurance money required, and she told her CSR that it was becoming more of a frequent problem.  Looks like I got lucky on this one.  Hopefully this is the last I have to deal with this.  I may not be so lucky next time

Well, it has happened AGAIN for the second time.  Cracked screen starting at the button, fanned up, rendering the phone completely useless.  I went to the Sprint store and requested to see the manager.  Luckily, the same manager was on duty when I turned in my FIRST Palm Pre for the cracked screen.  Once again, they gave me a brand new Palm Pre to replace my phone.  But this time there was a "however"!  If I have to go back for a third time or any other subsequent visit for this issue, they will not be able to replace my phone immediately as they have the other two times.  I will have to be without a phone for "3 to 5 business days" because they will have to "order" me a new phone.  But I have still yet to pay the $100 fee others are talking about.  As for my cracked screen, both times it happened while my Palm Pre was on my Touchstone Charger for an extended period of time.  Spring store folks are guessing that might be the problem and has told me to return my Touchstone Charger and they will replace it under the 1 year warranty.  I'll keep ya posted if anything else happens..... Cool

I bought my Pre at Best Buy, and the rep convinced me to spend $20 on an InvisibleShield by Zagg. It sticks to the entire front of the Pre. I wonder if this helps prevent cracking, and I wonder if Best Buy recommends the InvisibleShield to reduce returns? My screen has not cracked yet, but I have only had the Pre 2 weeks.

Also, my screen has a yellow blotch along the bottom near the button. Is this related to the cracking problem?

Anyone else have a Zagg InvisibleShield? Did your screen crack?
